IMO Ship Identification Number : Public DataType
The IMO Ship Identification Number is a 7 digit number that uniquely identifies a vessel over its entire life-cycle. The format is defined by the IMO and was established with SOLAS regulation XI-1/3. The numbers are assigned by IHS Maritime.
More information is available here: https://www.imonumbers.ihs.com/
There is a current proposal at the IMO to increase the length of IMO Ship Identification Number to 8 digits. For this reason, the length of this field is proactively set at 8 digits in DCSA standards.
Until the IMO actually implements the change though, valid strings remain limited to 7 digits.
https://wwwcdn.imo.org/localresources/en/OurWork/IIIS/Documents/IMO%20Ship%20Number%20&%20Extension%20FAQs.pdf
